My goal is to read 30 books this year and yesterday I hit 15! Here are my 5 favourite fiction reads of the year so far…
The Reformatory
By Tananarive Due
(2023)
5/5
One of the best books I’ve ever read. Tananarive Due writes about some of the worst human behaviour imaginable, but also some of the most beautiful depictions of bravery and friendship.
Young Robert is sent to a reformatory only to find it inhabited by the ghosts of the boys previously abused there. Meanwhile, his older sister Gloria exhausts herself trying to find a way to save him from the brutally racist justice system and set him free. Can they come up with a plan to escape and get their happy ending?

I Was A Teenage Slasher
By Stephen Graham Jones
(2024)
5/5
One of my most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint. SGJ knows how to play with the genre, keeping it fun and fresh but fulfilling all the conventions needed to keep it pure.
Tolly Driver becomes unwilling bound to slasher rules after a house party goes awry. Fated to play out a murderous revenge arc, him and his best friend Amber try everything in their power to stop the carnage. Can they find Tolly’s weakness and halt the deaths?
The Angel of Indian Lake
By Stephan Graham Jones
(2024)
4/5
I reiterate my last point: SGJ knows his way around a slasher. This is a brilliant ending to his trilogy following Jade Daniels, a horror fan repeatedly pulled into her own slasher story and forced to take on a role she feels unworthy of.
Once again Proofrock finds itself in the midst of chaos and death, with danger lurking everywhere. Can Jade survive once more and protect the people she cares about?

Clown in a Cornfield 2: Frendo Lives
By Adam Cesare
(2023)
4/5
Begins with Scream VI vibes but then becomes a whole new thing of murder madness and scathing commentary. This is a fun sequel that builds on the first and introduces some great new characters.
Quinn’s time at college is interrupted and she is drawn back to Kettle Springs once more. The centre of online conspiracy theories around the massacre, can she survive long enough to set the record straight?
Brainwyrms
By Alison Rumfitt
(2023)
3/5
If I had a nickel for every time I read a queer kinky parasite horror by a trans author, I’d have TWO nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice right?
Frankie’s life falls apart after a TERF decides to blow up her workplace. When she finds Vanya and kicks off an intense relationship full of mystery. Will she finally get what she craves?

As you can see, I’ve been reading a lot of newer horror books so far this year!
